As we reflect on our first year as an exhibitor at the Minnesota State Fair, we are overcome with gratitude for our volunteers and all the wonderful people who stopped by our booth to fully support our mission to reintroduce the skilled trades to people of all ages. With over 2.1 million people attending the Fair this year – an all-time record – we are enthusiastically looking forward to the future with all of our new connections and community of supporters!

If you were unable to make it to the Big Ideas, Inc. State Fair booth, here is a little bit on what you missed and what you need to know about our mission and why we need partners like you to succeed.

Our Mission

Big Ideas, Inc.’s mission is to provide the opportunity for learners of all ages to discover, explore, and learn real-world trade skills. Teaming with existing community education systems, school shops, local industry, and professional tradesmen and women (as instructors), we provide the model and structure for courses providing practice of both the hands-on technical skills as well as the soft skills needed to succeed in a trade.

Our Partners

You can bring Big Ideas to your community by working with our team to build local chapters! We provide our partners with:

  • Access to our start-up system, developed curriculum, and on-going support
  • Start-up funding (if needed) to create and promote Big Ideas’ classes in YOUR community
  • Scholarships for students entering technical and trades colleges
  • Cooperative efforts with other trades-promoting organizations to provide exposure and hands-on experience for all ages

Our Classes

Led by industry experts, our classes give students introductory level exposure to in-demand skilled trades jobs. These classes not allow students to experience potential careers first-hand, but they also provide connections to individuals who can help them map their path from on-the-job training, formal apprenticeships, or higher education. Some classes include:

  • Electrical
  • Welding
  • Carpentry
  • Commercial Cooking
  • Plumbing
  • Commercial Sewing
